Bup Backup for Non-AT&T Phones

(AT&T users click here for detailed instructions)

Phone Numbers Enter one or more phone numbers separated by commas
Carrier All phone numbers must be using the same carrier

If your carrier is not listed above, you can download Bup Backup directly to your mobile phone... Use the 'browser' on your mobile phone and type in m.bupmobile.com.

Some Notes:
  • Many phones, especially phones from carriers in the U.S.A. and Canada (such as T-Mobile and Sprint) will block the use of Bup Backup and similar applications. In this case, you cannot use Bup.
  • Compatibility can be determined by attemptng to download Bup to your phone - if your phone is not compatible, it will fail with some sort of security warning.
  • Verizon phones will never work with Bup - Verizon is a closed environment and does not allow many applications to run on their phones, sorry.
  • However, most phones outside of the U.S.A. and Canada will work.
  • Most smartphones such as the BlackBerry and Windows Mobile phones can download and run Bup.

About Data Usage

Without a data plan AT&T charges 1 cent per KB of transfer (this is a cost AT&T charges for using their network and is unrelated to Bup). With a data plan, you will not be charged extra.
There are two ways you will use data with Bup: The first is downloading the Bup application to your phone. The second is when you use Bup to backup/restore contacts or to send photos to your email.

Downloading Bup to your Phone:

  • Bup is about 100KB which equates to $1 (if you dont have a data plan).

Backup and Restore of Contacts:

  • The first time you use Bup, it will send all your contacts over the network. If you have 100 contacts this will use approximately 20KB and would cost 20 cents (without a data plan). Likewise, a restore to a new phone (one without your contacts on it) will cost approximately the same amount.
  • If you have backed up your contacts at least once, Bup uses VERY LITTLE data and ONLY the newest entries are sent (since the time of your last backup). To calculate these differences, Bup uses about 5KB for 100 contacts (or about 5 cents without a data plan). And you can send about 5 contacts per KB - this means updating 10 contacts is about 2 cents. Again, this is important only if you do not have a data plan.
  • These calculations are based on contacts with two numbers plus an email. We've assumed your carrier charges 1 cent per KB for data. In Summary...

Sending Photos: Send your photos easily to your email.

  • If you take a lot of pictures with your phone, you will want to use Bup Photo. HOWEVER, you will want to have a data plan to send pictures economically.
  • For small photos, MMS can be cheaper: MMS has max 300,000 bytes (and the carrier charges 20 cents if you have a plan otherwise $.50 or $1.00). So, this can be a good solution for photos up to 2 mega pixels. A larger size photo will be sent in multiple MMS, which costs more.
  • Why use Bup? Convenience and ease of use. With one-touch/one-command you can send all photos. No need to select&click, select&click for each photo. Also, since most photos are large, 1 megapixel is around 100,000 bytes (cost $1 without data plan).
